The Was Heads of Condemned Prisoners

Bought at an auction in March 1995,
18 heads of condemned prisoners are displayed in the museum.

The complexion from beyond the grave and the glass eyes of these wax heads instantly make your blood run cold. When you learn that the hair is human (taken from the corpses) and the blood on the bandage which wraps the forehead of one of the tortured victims is also human ... chills are guaranteed.

Wax heads
Identification is in Process

A number of people recognize Landru, the Captain Dreyfus, Guillaume Seznec: it's possible ... but not certain.

The maker of these heads could have been an employee of the wax museum. The name of Albert Chartier has been given. He was authorized to enter French prisons between 1920 and 1924 in order to gather anthropometric measurements and minute details concerning the skin and hair color required for authentic reproductions.

The collection was exhibited in fairs throughout France before disappearing in 1940.

The previous owner found them by accident in a cupboard and thought of making candles of them before finally deciding to sell them at an auction thereby allowing Maurice Dufresne to acquire them.

They are displayed in the Museum Dufresne not far from the guillotine, an appropriate place to complete the scene ....
